Web Standards Group
Inaugural meet-up, 22 June 2005
A good turnout of ten at the Blankenberge Belgian Beer Café in Takapuna on Wednesday night.
There’s a strong interest in having regular meetings and with six of us keen to contribute to the organisation we have a great platform from which to build.
The consensus for the frequency of meetings was almost exactly split between monthly and bi-monthly.
Almost everyone would be happy to part with between $10 and $20 to help defray the costs associated with a larger, more formal meeting (hire of venue, hire of data projector, some form of catering, etc.).
Some of the topics that interest the group are (in no particular order):
- Web design for the old school designer
- The DOM
- JavaScript
- Design
- Content management
- Selling web standards development to clients
- Legal aspects of web development and their relationship with web standards
- Improving usability and accessibility
- Semantic mark-up
- Designing for multiple browsing environments
- AJAX
- Basics of web standards design
Some of the subjects that members of the group would be prepared to present to future meetings:
- Web design for the old school designer
- How to convince clients of the benefits of web standards
- The DOM
- Basics of content/presentation separation
- Implementation tips and tricks
It seems there’s plenty of scope to build up to some very interesting meetings in the near future. Here’s to the next gathering!
